IND vs ENG: Distinguish between the Anthony de Mello Trophy and Pataudi Trophy

A significant part of the history of India and England’s test rivalry lies in their history. The first-ever test match that India played against England was in 1932. Since then, both sides have been a remarkable part of the test cricket spectacular. The governing test teams in the world are India and England in the last few years. England is currently in India competing for the Anthony de Mello trophy in a five-match test series.

Under the leadership of Ben Stoke, England began the series with a win against India at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. In Hyderabad, India bounced back nicely and defeated England exhaustively. Also, respectively, in the second, third, and fourth test matches, they were played in Vishakapatnam, Rajkot, and Ranchi. 

What is the Difference between the Anthony de Mello Trophy and the Pataudi Trophy?

 

Often, people have heard about two different names for the trophies. While India and England confront in a bilateral test series. The two trophies are designated the “Pataudi Trophy” and the “Anthony de Mello Trophy.” Have you ever wondered why for the bilateral test series, there are two distinct names between two countries? If in case, then we have got you covered. 

To the winners of the bilateral test series between India and England played in India, the Anthony de Mello Trophy is rewarded. Whereas the Pataudi Trophy is awarded to winners of the test series between England and India played in England. The first Anthony de Mello Trophy was played in 1951-52, where both teams played a 1-1 draw in the five-match test series. Among the founding members of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was Anthony de Mello. His name was given to the test series between India and England played in India. 

In 2007, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) instituted the Pataudi Trophy to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the first-ever England vs India test series that took place in 1932. As an honor to the Pataudi family, the trophy is called the “Pataudi Trophy.” Nawab of Pataudi, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, played test cricket for both England and India. Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, also known as Tiger Pataudi, represented India in 46 tests.

In 2012, the Pataudi family demanded to be awarded the Pataudi Trophy as the winner’s prize, in both test series which were played in India or England. However, BCCI denied their request and said it would not rename the Anthony de Mello Trophy. From 7 March 2024, the fifth test of the ongoing Anthony de Mello Trophy will be played in Dharamsala. The hosts already lead the series 3-1 with one match left, so it will just be a formality before they lift the trophy.
